COMBAT STRESS - learn more

One of the simplest ways to deal with stress is to take time out to meditate and focus on your breathing; Just the simple act of focusing the breath can calm our minds. Even 5 or 10 minutes a day can give us a peaceful lift. Practicing Yoga is an ancient practice and is well known for its rejuvenating and restorative properties. The gentle massage of our internal organs as we twist and stretch in various poses focuses our minds on our bodies and our internal connection with the world and ourselves. ACE studies have shown that when large muscle groups repeatedly contract and relax as in Yoga, the brain receives a signal to the neurotransmitters, which in turn makes you feel more relaxed and alert.

If you are anxious, chances are your body has high cortisol and adrenaline levels. Prolonged exposure to high levels of these natural chemicals can also lead to depression. Cardiovascular exercise brings cortisol levels down and any kind of exercise that raises our heart rate will help rid stress from our bodies. When we exercise at this heart-pumping level endorphins are released, providing feelings of well-being. In addition, when we do any cardio outside (such as power walking, biking, running or swimming) we also have the positive benefits of connecting with nature. We can observe nature, which in itself can be relaxing, and get increased oxygen while improving our heart and lung function. ACE studies have again shown that "people feel less jittery and hyperactive following exercise and that one exercise session generates 90-120 minutes of relaxation response. This post euphoria improves your mood and leaves you feeling relaxed."

Exercise improves sleep. How often have you found it difficult to get to sleep, to stay asleep or to get back to sleep if you wake up? Are you under stress? It is common knowledge that people who exercise sleep better than those who don't. Contrary to popular belief, exercise gives you more energy instead of zapping it. Exercise also encourages you to follow a healthier diet. Who wants to ruin all the good work they have done with a bad food choice? We all know that good nutrition helps the body manage stress better too.

Stress can leave you drained and anxious which can in turn lead to depression. Exercise has been proven to alleviate these symptoms so take the time to work out alone or with a friend and sweat out your stress. You are worth it and no one else can do this for you!
